High-speed police chases are controversial. While it may be occasionally necessary for the police to chase a car through the city at high speeds, doing so puts everyone on the road at risk. A fleeing driver is already making the poor decision of evading police and is likely not driving with much regard for the safety of anyone else in the area.
A simple traffic stop late last month in northwest Detroit led to a car accident that caused serious injuries. After stopping momentarily for police, a driver in a burgundy sport utility vehicle fled, ran a red light at a high rate of speed and crashed into a sedan driven by a 78-year-old man.
