Detroit officers facing police brutality allegations

Police officers are supposed to serve and protect the members of their community. However, as residents of Southfield and the greater Detroit area have come to know, sometimes police abuse their authority. A recent case involving a man from West Bloomfield and members of the Detroit Police Department serves as an unfortunate reminder that police brutality remains a serious problem.

The alleged victim in this case was a 36-year-old man from the West Bloomfield area who works as an advertising executive. He was driving early in the morning when he was pulled over by two Detroit officers. He claims the two officers severely beat him in front of his children and ex-wife, then falsely accused him of attacking the officers and reaching for one of their guns.

Michigan brothers die in car accident

Two brothers from Lowell, aged 30 and 26, died on May 20 in a motor vehicle accident near Holland. The brothers were passengers in a car that ran a stop sign and collided with another car. Authorities pronounced the brothers dead at the scene.

The driver of the car that ran the stop sign went to the hospital for treatment and was released. Three women who were in the other car involved in the collision were also released from the hospital after treatment.

Southwest Detroit accident leaves man in critical condition

Earlier this month, a driver in an SUV crashed into the rear of a tractor-trailer on a street in southwest Detroit. The driver, a 39-year-old man, was in critical condition following the crash. The car accident required the closure of Fort Street for hours as police investigated the cause of the crash.

Victims of car accidents, such as the SUV driver in this case, can incur substantial expenses for medical treatment, frequently suffer lost wages and may be entitled to compensation for pain and suffering. Often auto accident victims also have to contend with property losses due to the damage to their cars.

Does the stress of Tax Day increase the number of fatal car accidents?

The tax deadline is now behind us, and people in Southfield may be happy about that for more than one reason. In addition to the stress of filing your taxes, researchers found that fatal motor vehicle accidents increase markedly on the day that taxes are due. Over the last three decades, 6 percent more people died on our nation's roads on Tax Day than on any of the other days one week before and one week after Tax Day.

The study's lead author notes that pedestrians and passengers fare slightly worse than drivers. The study also estimates that the extra fatalities result in around $40 million annually in losses to the community.

Family of shooting victim says police wrongfully killed their son

When a police officer responds to a call, that officer has a duty to remain as calm as possible, especially if an armed individual is on the scene. Officers may use excessive force when they are afraid or want to maintain control of a situation. However, police should make every effort to avoid deadly force, even when faced with someone who has a weapon.

Still, situations arise where officers use excessive force. Family members of a Redford Township man who was shot by a SWAT team are filing a lawsuit against the township in federal court. The suit alleges that police wrongfully killed the man, who suffered from bipolar disorder, as he hid in a closet during a 10-hour standoff in December 2008.

Six-year-old critically injured in pedestrian accident

A sport utility vehicle hit a young Michigan girl recently as she was crossing Nine Mile Road. She suffered serious head injuries in the pedestrian accident and remains in the hospital in critical condition.

The girl was on her way home from a restaurant with her mother and 10-year-old sister. Witnesses said that the six-year-old ran across the busy street, following her mother and sister, just as the light for drivers changed to green.

Woman injured after being deliberately hit by car

People expect that the roads they walk and drive on will be safe. Although car accidents are a frequent occurrence in Michigan and elsewhere, people do not expect that drivers will deliberately cause harm to others. However, after an argument on a Detroit street, a young man between the ages of 20 and 25 appears to have intentionally hit a 28-year-old woman with his car at a high rate of speed.

The pedestrian accident occurred in the early afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 4. Fortunately, police say they know the identity of the suspect.

Young man dies in tragic motorcycle accident

The roads can often be a dangerous place for drivers in their cars, and they can be even more dangerous for people riding a motorcycle. All too often, a driver's inattention or recklessness causes serious injuries or even death to motorcycle drivers in Michigan and beyond.

Recently, a 25-year-old man was involved in a motorcycle accident when he collided with a vehicle being driven by a 37-year-old man. He died at the scene of the accident. Police have now charged the driver of the vehicle with drunk driving.

Pedestrian accident claims the life of Michigan man

A Michigan man left his home on the morning of Jan. 5 likely expecting to return home safely, but a tragic accident would prevent him from ever doing that again. According to reports, the man was struck and killed on Interstate 696 as he was trying to change a tire on his vehicle.

The tragic pedestrian accident happened around 6:30 a.m. A Michigan state police trooper said several vehicles struck the man. The man was reportedly in his 40's, though little else is known about him.
