Five Oakland Township teens injured in car accident

As relatively inexperienced drivers, teenagers need to be especially careful when they get behind the wheel of a car. A terrible car accident in Oakland Township last week left five teenagers, all students at the same high school, injured.

A 16-year-old girl driving a Saturn Ion carrying four passengers allegedly ran a stop sign and collided with a Dodge Nitro. The driver of the Nitro and her toddler passenger were not injured as their car hit the Ion on the driver's side.

Drunk Driving: Reality, liability, and the victims it claims

It goes without saying that the holiday season evokes a myriad of emotions and celebration. It seems as though commercials appear more often reminding revelers to be responsible while enjoying themselves at parties or public events. Unfortunately, commercials don't resonate to the capacity they hope to. And furthermore, they certainly don't continue to have hold all year round.

The news the past few months in and around metro Detroit has been devastating. In late October, a 23-year-old young man was driving the wrong way down the Lodge Freeway around 4am when he collided head on with another vehicle. The impact caused both cars to burst into flames, killing all 5 persons involved. The driver at fault was reported to have registered a blood-alcohol level of .26, more than three times the legal limit. And in November, a man was arrested for drunk driving after sideswiping a sheriff's department patrol car in Pontiac. He registered a blood-alcohol level of .34. His three children were in the car.

Stories such as these are unfortunately not few and far between at the law offices of Dan Romano. A few years ago, a woman met her friends at a bowling alley for their weekly night of fun and relaxation. She was drinking while she bowled and continued to do so at the alley's bar after the game was finished. Obviously drunk, her friends did not offer her a ride home and the bartender did not refuse service. She left on her own accord and proceeded to drive home.

A group of young kids were on their bikes and playing safely in their neighborhood when the woman sped down their street and hit one of the teenagers. She did not stop. She fled the scene without any regard to whether or not this young boy was alive or dead. His friends held him in the street until an ambulance arrived.

The woman was arrested approximately 4 and a half hours later and yet she still registered a blood-alcohol level of .13. The young man suffered a very severe brain injury requiring immediate emergency brain surgery and multiple surgeries thereafter including 24-hr care.

Dan Romano represented the victim and settled the case for $520,000. Under the Dram Shop Action, the bowling alley was also held responsible for not following compliancy rules and serving the woman who was visibly intoxicated.

Although all three of these sad situations could have been prevented in some way, the reality is that those who do not drink responsibly and drive are more likely to cause an accident than not. And these accidents are the ones you read about that cause the death of innocent victims.
