Many lives are lost in drunk driving accidents in Michigan, but recent numbers show that the number of drunk driving crashes and fatalities has declined in recent years.

According to the news source, the number of car accidents caused by drunk driving is down 38 percent from 2001. In 2001, there were more than 6,400 alcohol-related crashes. In 2010, there were slightly more than 4,000.

In addition, the number of drunk driving fatalities is down more than 60 percent from 2001. In 2010, drunk driving claimed the lives of 264 people.

Michigan isn't the only state to see a decline in alcohol-related crashes. All across the country the number of drunk driving fatalities was down almost five percent in 2010 from the year before.

Officials say the decline is due to a number of different factors. Vehicles are getting safer to drive, road conditions have improved and people are making better decisions.

While the number of drunk driving fatalities is down, even one death is too many. Drivers not only risk their own lives when they drive drunk, but risk hurting others.

In addition to criminal charges, drunk drivers can also face lawsuits for causing harm to other people. Those in Michigan who have been injured in an alcohol-related accident may have cause for a personal injury lawsuit. The compensation they receive may be able to go towards medical bills or to make up for lost wages.

People in Michigan and elsewhere expect the roads they drive on will be safe. When that isn't the case, legal action can be taken.
