Community policing initiative means more cops on the streets

Detroit's history of police brutality complaints is about to collide with a dramatic increase in officer presence on the streets. Detroit police will implement an 18-month trial of a method of community policing called "Broken Windows," a program that other cities have used for decades.

Under the initiative, minor violations such as cracked windshields, broken taillights and loitering will be targeted with the intention of preventing more violent behavior.

Best-selling author loses life in northern Michigan car accident

Readers across the nation mourned the loss of a best-selling author this as he was laid to rest on Monday, Feb. 13, 2012 in Southfield. The author lost his life in a fatal car accident on Friday, Feb. 10, 2012 in northern Michigan when his vehicle collided with another.

The self-made success was known as a "treasured author" whose readers often "found inspiration in all of his books." He was only 53-years-old when his life was abruptly and unexpectedly ended.

Woman injured after being deliberately hit by car

People expect that the roads they walk and drive on will be safe. Although car accidents are a frequent occurrence in Michigan and elsewhere, people do not expect that drivers will deliberately cause harm to others. However, after an argument on a Detroit street, a young man between the ages of 20 and 25 appears to have intentionally hit a 28-year-old woman with his car at a high rate of speed.

The pedestrian accident occurred in the early afternoon on Saturday, Feb. 4. Fortunately, police say they know the identity of the suspect.

City of Detroit may be fined for ignoring complaints against police

Recently, a district court judge threatened hefty sanctions against the city of Detroit for its inability to investigate citizen complaints about police brutality. In January, more than 400 citizen complaints had not yet been reviewed.

Accusing the department and its investigators of not understanding the significance of the situation, the judge found that the hefty backlog was unacceptable.

Young woman loses arm in devastating boating accident

It could happen anywhere, especially in areas close to lakeshore like Southfield. Big events lure people to partake in activities in which they may not have a lot of experience, and big boating events are no exception. One woman has learned all too well that inexerperienced boat drivers can mean a higher risk for boating accidents.

Swimming at an event known as "Lake Bash," a young woman in her twenties was run over by a first-time boat driver who rented a boat for the event. The accident happened as the woman swam to reach the boat to get out of the water. She thought the propellers were off, but she was wrong.

Young man dies in tragic motorcycle accident

The roads can often be a dangerous place for drivers in their cars, and they can be even more dangerous for people riding a motorcycle. All too often, a driver's inattention or recklessness causes serious injuries or even death to motorcycle drivers in Michigan and beyond.

Recently, a 25-year-old man was involved in a motorcycle accident when he collided with a vehicle being driven by a 37-year-old man. He died at the scene of the accident. Police have now charged the driver of the vehicle with drunk driving.

Michigan sees a decline in drunk driving crashes and fatalities

Many lives are lost in drunk driving accidents in Michigan, but recent numbers show that the number of drunk driving crashes and fatalities has declined in recent years.

According to the news source, the number of car accidents caused by drunk driving is down 38 percent from 2001. In 2001, there were more than 6,400 alcohol-related crashes. In 2010, there were slightly more than 4,000.

Pedestrian accident claims the life of Michigan man

A Michigan man left his home on the morning of Jan. 5 likely expecting to return home safely, but a tragic accident would prevent him from ever doing that again. According to reports, the man was struck and killed on Interstate 696 as he was trying to change a tire on his vehicle.

The tragic pedestrian accident happened around 6:30 a.m. A Michigan state police trooper said several vehicles struck the man. The man was reportedly in his 40's, though little else is known about him.

Car accident takes the life of woman in Oakland County

Any type of fatality during the holiday season is a tragedy. People often celebrate life during this time of year, yet some people will not make it through the season. Such was the case when a road near the Oakland County government complex had to be closed following a fatal car accident.

The accident happened on Dec. 21. According to the Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office, the car accident took the life of one female motorist, but her identity has not been released. The accident involved the north and southbound lanes of Telegraph Road just north of Pontiac Lake Road. Oakland County sheriff's deputies say the accident occurred around 10 a.m. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Man killed in hit-and-run; Oakland County police look for driver

Investigators in Oakland County are looking for the driver who struck a 53-year-old Commerce Township man on Dec. 13 about 10:30 at night and then drove away. The hit-and-run accident resulted in the man's death. The victim was struck from behind as he was walking.

Officials believe that alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash, saying it may explain why the victim was in the roadway. Although the investigation is ongoing, police have not found any pieces of the offending vehicle and were only able to garner a general description of it that was provided by a witness nearby.
